Delving into multifaceted nature of exclusion within academia and the arts

Join us on November 29, from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon, at the Digital Hub, Jesus College, University of Oxford.

Event open to University of Oxford academic network and the Oxford arts network.

The Ethox Centre, in collaboration with Oxford Ethics and Humanities and the Oxford Centre for the History of Science, Medicine and Technology, invites you to the inaugural workshop of the "What about Exclusion?" series.

This event aims to delve into the multifaceted nature of exclusion within academia and the arts.

There has been much talk of exclusion from - or in - the academy and the arts. But the term signifies different things to different people. For some, exclusion is a matter of ingrained structural, religious, or racial inequalities. For others, it is a case of incompatibility with prevailing norms. Conversely, the inclusion of some who feel excluded may result in the exclusion of others.

This workshop marks the first in a series of events "What about Exclusion?" designed to explore the nature of exclusion and associated problems. It stems from a successful series of workshops in Oxford on the theme of "Virus of Hate," involving a collaboration between artist Grzegorz Kwiatkowski and scholars based in Oxford and other universities. In this first workshop, focusing on the arts and academic life, participants will speak about their own experiences of exclusion and/or aspects of exclusion in their own fields, followed by a panel discussion and Q&A.

Speakers:

  • Paulina Kewes, Oxford University
  • Paul Lodge, Oxford University
  • Peter Constantine, University of Connecticut
